OAKLAND – The Willis Reed references were coming hot and heavy before tipoff between Golden State and Denver at Oracle Arena on Thursday night, as word spread quickly that Warriors forward David Lee was active despite having suffered an injury just 12 days before that was expected to end his season. He entered play for the first time with 2:27 left in the first quarter and Denver leading 23-18.
Lee, who suffered a torn right hip flexor in Golden State’s Game 1 loss, is available to play as the Warriors attempt to close out their series that they lead 3-2. He was the Warriors’ lone All-Star this season, averaging 18.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.
BOX SCORE: Nuggets at Warriors
While his appearance in the team’s layup line before the game was a shock to fans and media on hand, Lee is confident that he can’t do any long-term damage by playing and is well aware that he’ll have plenty of time to recover whenever the Warriors’ offseason arrives.
Reed’s everlasting and dramatic moment came in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals, when he played in the win vs. the Los Angeles Lakers despite suffering a serious leg injury two games before. The comparison to Lee is hyperbole defined, but Lee’s reappearance surely adds intrigue to a series that was already plenty compelling.
