Kellie Pickler was near-perfect again.
The hips were swiveling non-stop Monday as Dancing With the Stars celebrated Latin Night.
The six remaining celebs had to dance two rounds, with a new twist to the competition. The couple with the highest score from judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba after the first round immediately won immunity for Tuesday night. The second round included a dance-off challenge, which gave extra scores to the winners.
Here’s how the stars stacked up:
Kellie Pickler knew it was going to be a difficult week because she had three concerts this week, meaning partner Derek Hough had to travel around the country to rehearse with her. She looked frustrated and tired in rehearsals. But Kelly put on her long blonde wig and Derek went shirtless to samba around the ballroom with no problem. The crowd adored it. “When you dance, I see perfection in every single move,” said Carrie Ann. But, she added, “I don’t feel you when you dance.” The crowd booed. Len said it was “crisp, clean, hot and spicy. I thought you had the how of the technique and the wow of the performance.” Bruno raved, “It was the perfect balance of the technique and the performance.” Derek picked her up and carried her across the floor, he was so happy with the comments. Scores: 9, 10, 10 = 29
Kellie and Derek had the highest cumulative scores so far this season, so they won immunity. No need to vote for them. They are definitely through to next week and can’t be eliminated on Tuesday’s results show. While Juanes performed, the rest of the stars got ready for a dance-off.
Aly Raisman had to be careful this week because partner Mark Ballas was suffering from a bad back. We saw him go to Cedars-Sinai spine center, where a doctor said he had a sprained back or a disc injury. Henry Byalikov had to come in and rehearse with Aly as Mark recovered. She wound up dancing a shimmy-filled salsa with Mark, who appeared to be as limber as ever, although most of their moves stayed close to the floor, and at one point both were dancing on their knees. Bruno said it was a “tutti-frutti delicious cocktail.” Carrie Ann said she “loved it.” Len said it was “tasty” but he wanted a few more “recognizable” salsa moves. Scores: 10, 9, 10 = 29 + 3 = 32
Zendaya was feeling the pressure of her paso doble, which partner Val Chmerkovskiy was being “very intense” about in rehearsals. The Disney star felt she had to “match his intensity.” Sporting an appropriate scowl and executing the staccato moves, she wowed the audience and the judges, but she wasn’t perfect. Len loved it, but told her to keep her chin up. Bruno also said her chin was down too much, but said, “You are a magnificent dancer.” Carrie Ann said her “lines were gorgeous.” Scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27 + 3 = 30
Jacoby Jones and partner Karina Smirnoff had a rough week. He lost a day to a sore body. “I love to dance, but I didn’t know dancing was this serious, this intense …” he said. Their salsa sizzled, though, with Karina twirling her body up and down and all around his. “Wow,” said host Tom Bergeron. The audience whooped and cheered. “Was that an earthquake or did you just rock this place?!” said Len, adding that he wanted fewer lifts. Jacoby’s mom then took on Len from the audience, pointing at her eyes and saying she was “watching him.” Len said it was “fabulous.” Bruno loved Jacoby’s hip action and said Karina flew “more than Iron Man” during the dance. Carrie Ann praised Jacoby, saying, “You could fart the salsa. You just have it in your body…. You get down and dirty.” Jacoby continued the fart discussion with host Brooke Burke-Charvet, explaining, “My grandma told me if you keep it in you’ll die. So I let it out.” He also vowed that when he goes back to the Baltimore Ravens he’s going to “talk so much trash” about conditioning. Scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27
Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson had to dance a rumba. Playing sexy was no problem for the soap star, but the hip action was a challenge. “I’m trying so hard to do this,” he said in rehearsals. On the ballroom floor, the slow beat lent itself more to Kym’s sultry moves than to his attempts. Bruno: “They say hips don’t lie; in your case I wish they could.” The crowd booed. Carrie Ann agreed, saying it was “lacking fluidity,” which caused him to lack “a connection.” Len liked the “content” but said it lacked a “little bit of musicality in the arms… but overall … well done.” Scores: 7, 8, 7 = 22 + 3 = 25
Sean Lowe said he was “bummed” about last week, when he was in the bottom two. This week’s rumba was proving to be “difficult” for him in rehearsals. “I have to pretend I’m in love … and I don’t have romantic feelings for Peta,” he said. So partner Peta Murgatroyd brought in the Bachelor star’s new fiancee, Catherine Guidici, to help him “tap into” his dance character. On the ballroom floor, he seemed to be trying his hardest to pull it off. Carrie Ann said she was “very impressed.” She liked his “seductive look” and thought they had chemistry. Len said he was “wooden” and his hands were “flapping away.” Bruno said Sean was like “50 shades of Sean” in his grey outfit. She quibbled about his “bum sticking out like he was going to the toilet” but otherwise liked it. Scores: 8, 8, 8 = 24
Andy Dick says he’s in the “pack of scraggly coyotes hanging on by a thread.” He had to dance a rumba. “Don’t get mad at me if you fall in love with me,” he told his partner Sharna Burgess. He cracked up the crowd playing a (comedic) Latin lover, caressing and trying to kiss Sharna. Len liked “the fun of the dance,” but it was “more erratic than erotic.” He said it needed more “movement.” Bruno said he is only doing “steps” and “hoping for the best.” Carrie Ann criticized his “arms.” Scores: 5, 6, 6 = 17
Round two: Andy and Sharna had to perform a cha cha for their dance-off against Aly and Mark. Len admired Andy’s “pluck.” Bruno said “someone” — meaning Aly — was better, technically. Carrie Ann praised them both, but it was obvious that Andy couldn’t hold a candle to Aly. The judges gave 3 points to Aly.
Zendaya, sporting sneakers, and Val did a zippy jive. But Jacoby and Karina love the jive and they threw in three of his best moves — two splits and a jump over his standing partner. “It was like watching two champions,” said Bruno. Carrie Ann loved it. Len said it was a “tough call.” But the judges gave it to Zendaya and Val, giving them 3 more points.
Sean and Peta took on Ingo and Kym in a battle for the best rumba. Carrie Ann praised them both. Len said there was a “clear winner.” Bruno said it was “like watching a battle of the hunks.” Carrie Ann and Len felt Ingo won; Bruno felt Sean did, but the 3 points went to Ingo.
Is it Andy’s week to exit?
