The Associated Press, al-Jazeer, France 24 TV, The Qatari government, NPR in the US, and now the United Kingdom-based Guardian media organization on Sunday.
Each of these has been a victim in a string of cyber attacks that has rocked the world’s media organizations. This latest attack on the Guardian appears to be in retaliation against Twitter for suspending its account.
Various accounts belonging to Guardian Stage, Guardian Film, Guardian Books, and Guardian Music (@gmfeed), were taken over by the Syrian Electronic Army on Sunday. The group promised to keep causing “problems” for Twitter by attacking other accounts.

“We will keep hacking #Twitter accounts and cause for you problems if you keep suspending our accounts #SEA,” Syrian activists wrote on @guardianbooks.
Another post read, “#Twitter_SecurityTeam Think if they suspended our accounts that they will stop us!”
The cyber attack by the Syrian Electronic Army against the Guardian is just the latest in a series of attacks against media companies. The SEA is a group that claims to support Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president. In the past month alone, the SEA has been responsible for either hacking or taking down accounts for CBS News, NPR, BBC News, and Associated Press.
The @AP account hack was of serious importance because of the drastic effect it caused on the markets in the United States. The message-which was a fake-claimed that an explosion at the White House had occurred and caused the Dow Jones Industrial Average to dip for a few minutes.
The SEA has previously accused NPR of being biased in its reports regarding the conflict in Syria: “We will not say why we attacked @NPR … They know the reason and that enough #SEA #Syria.”
If the latest events of the Twitterverse have taught us anything, its that there is a serious password security problem in store for users, even-or especially-professional ones.
